In Barbados you’ll hear calls for a ‘Black and Coke’ and this can only mean a good old shot of Mount Gay XO in their drink. Spicy apricot, fiery heat and honeyed fruit work together to create the distinct flavour of Mount Gay XO. The maturation process adds a dry oaky complexity to the drink, a distinction which is widely enjoyed.

Your ancestors may even have heard of this one, Mount Gay is one of the world’s oldest rums, dating back to the 18th century. Pure Barbadian spring water and sugar cane are blended to create the trademark flavour, the recipe still the same as when first created. Notes of apricot and banana burst from the bottle and there’s a subtle smokiness that comes from the Kentucky bourbon barrels the rum is aged in.

A young Havana Club offering, this 7 year old Cuban rum gets its amber hues from the bourbon casks it’s matured in. The aroma is reminiscent of first thing in the morning, rich in roasted coffee with vanilla and gingerbread coming through too. Vanilla fudge is the prominent flavour when you take a sip and it’s soon paired with sweet dairy chocolate, fruit trifle and woody oak notes. A bright and breezy Guyana rum, young at just 5 years old, El Dorado 5 year is one of the youngest offering from this producer. Creamy butterscotch is the leading scent when you open the bottle and it’s soon partnered with bright notes of tropical fruit and a hint of mint oil. An 80:20 blend of pot still to column still rums is used to deliver the quality taste of Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva. Aged for up to 12 years this exclusive rum is a heady concoction with sandalwood and fresh leather aromas that lead to a deep and bitter flavour. A St. Lucian rum with real character, Chairman’s Reserve is a classic golden rum that blends together both pot still and continuous still rums. Brugal 1888 was launched in 1988 to celebrate the company’s centenary and benefits from aging in ex-whisky barrels for 14 to 16 years. A portion of the blend is also aged in sherry butts and the aroma evidences this sweet sherry scent. The flavour is full-bodied and the sherry flavour remains with vanilla, toffee and vibrant liquorice notes also come through. Dry oak tannins are underlying throughout and add depth to the character of this rum.

Appleton Rare 12 Year Rum brings together rums of ages between 12 and 18 offering one of the finest quality aged rums that Jamaica has to offer.
