The popular distilled alcoholic beverage is made from sugarcane by products, such as molasses, or directly from sugarcane juice, by a process of fermentation and distillation. The distillate, a clear liquid, is then usually aged in oak barrels.

A 12 year old dark rum from Ron Abuelo of Panama. They age their rum in whiskey barrels, which adds a distinct vanilla sweetness. This 12 year old was launched in 2009, and is elegant, slightly smoky and rich. It was awarded a Gold at the 2009 Ministry of Rum Tasting Competition.
A rare rum blend made in Panama, Ron Abuelo Centuria is aged in Jack Daniel's whiskey barrels in the solera method. Some of the rums are as old as 30 years, and the flavour is astonishingly rich and punchy.

The second release of Angostura's Cask Collection No.1 is a 16 year old rum from Trinidad which was allowed to age for 10 years in American oak casks before being transferred over to once-used French oak casks that previously held Cognac for the final 6 years. Light-bodied and smooth in flavour there is a smoky depth to the character of Appleton White which isn’t common amongst lighter rums. Rich, sweet dark rum from one of the most well known spirits brands in the world - Bacardi. This bottling of Bacardi Carta Negra has been bottled at a slightly-higher-than-usual 40% ABV, and still carries a flavour profile packed with dark coffee, molasses and cinnamon. A perfect dark rum for cocktails and mixed drinks.
Another string to the Bacardi bow is Oakheart and sweetly spiced spirit drink. It doesn’t have quite the ABV to be classed as a regular rum but it has many of the characteristics a depth of flavour you’d expect. Liquorice fudge, cinnamon and baked pastry all come through in the nose and many of the same notes are present in the flavour with additional vanilla, pepper and spiced elements. Blackwell Black Gold Rum is a Jamaican classic that was actually created by the owner of Island Records. A traditional recipe, rich in tropical fruit, treacle and toffee, each shot of Blackwell is one you’ll remember. Woodynotes come through on tasting and add a slight bitterness to the tropical overtones. Charcoal too comes through, lingering until the end, and adding real character to this bright and exotic Jamaican rum.
Brugal 1888 was launched in 1988 to celebrate the company’s centenary and benefits from aging in ex-whisky barrels for 14 to 16 years. A portion of the blend is also aged in sherry butts and the aroma evidences this sweet sherry scent. The flavour is full-bodied and the sherry flavour remains with vanilla, toffee and vibrant liquorice notes also come through. Dry oak tannins are underlying throughout and add depth to the character of this rum.
Brugal Anejo offers classic rum flavours and is one of the finest Dominican rums on the market. Fudge and overripe bananas are rife in the aroma and fresh woody tones come through too. The flavour is reminiscent of an indulgent crème brulee with dry toffee notes. Black pepper spice adds a welcome kick and helps temper the sweetness and brings out the dry oak notes even further. A true Dominican classic that deserves at least one try.
A blend of Domincan rums come together to create the characteristic flavour of Brugal Extra Viejo 8 year. The mix of rums are all aged for a minimum of three years and this delivers a sweet yet nutty aroma packed with banana, vanilla and chocolate notes. The buttery sweetness continues onto the palate but soon gives way to a spicier coffee-driven flavour, with black pepper and cinnamon providing that appreciated hit of hot spice. This modern interpretation takes sugarcane from eight Caribbean countries before distilling at the West Indies Rum Distillery in Barbados.
