Tokinoka Black is a Japanese whisky that was created by Akito Ueda, master blender at the White Oak distillery. It was made with a blend of malt whisky (50%) and grain whisky (50%) before being in matured three different types of casks - ex-bourbon, ex-sherry and new oak barrels. Jameson Caskmates is an intriguing release. Having sent some of their casks to the local craft stout brewers at Franciscan Well, the casks were returned to Midleton where they were subsequently used to give a stout finish to Jameson! We tasted it before it was available in the UK when we visited Cork just before St. Patrick's Day 2015, and we know that some of the fine folk at Irish Distillers were worried that it may be seen as a bit of a gimmick. Perhaps to an extent it is, but more importantly, it works - a worthwhile experiment that's produced a unique and interesting Irish whiskey.

A whiskey created by the Dublin Liberties distillery and the founders of the New York's excellent Dead Rabbit Saloon, one of the world's best cocktail bars and an all-round great place to go for a drink. A blend of malt and grain whiskeys, this is matured first in bourbon casks before a finish in virgin American-oak casks for an extra kick of spice.

County Cork’s finest creation, Jameson whisky has been enjoyed in Ireland and beyond for over two centuries. Known around the world for its palatable smoothness and velvety touch on the palate, Jameson’s flavour is also worthy of note, sweet and aromatic and thick with marmalade and citrus notes. The sharper flavours are balanced against a touch of sweet vanilla cream, delivering that classic Jameson’s flavour the world knows and loves.

Produced by the Teeling Whiskey Company, this is a delicious small-batch blend with a very high malt content. Interestingly enough, it's also been matured in rum casks for added spice.

The first line extension to the Maker's Mark range since the '50s, Maker's 46 is essentially the standard expression with added spice. This was not intended to compete with the core expression, instead it's a cousin to it, something different for those that like spicy bourbon. They add this extra dimension by inserting seared French oak staves into the barrels (with the stave profile "number 46" - thus the name). It's utterly stunning. Yet it is 47% abv . Confusing.

The second release in Jameson Caskmates range, finished this time in casks that once held zesty IPA. The combination adds further layers of hop fruitiness to the whiskies already fruity character as well as a touch of citrus, floral notes and some balancing bitterness. Perfect for a boilermaker – sip of IPA, sip of Jameson Caskmates, repeat.

Peated to a heavyweight 40ppm, Port Charlotte Scottish Barley is a multi-vintage Cuvee crafted from casks hand-picked by head distiller Adam Hannett. This remarkable single malt, originally created by the legendary distiller Jim McEwan, represents a union between the classic floral elegance of Bruichladdich and heavy peat.

A fresh and fruity whisky from Yamazaki, full of red fruit and a touch of sherry cask. It's also got some mizunara (Japanese oak) matured whisky in the mix, which comes through as a complex spicy and almost incense-like note. A well put together and deep dram.

Michter's small-batch bourbon is named after a former 'oldest distillery in the USA', and is currently wowing the UK bar scene. Sweet, fruity and spicy, it packs in plenty of flavour.

Caol Ila 12 Year Old is what other Islay wish they could be, the only Islay whiskey that has brought a smile to Markus face, hungover as it was after a night of Karaoke. A real peaty beauty.

This is a bottle of Glen Ranoch single malt Scotch whisky. Ought to serve well as an introduction to Highlands whisky.

We assume that this new no age statement peated Tomintoul must be similar to the Old Ballantruan but at a reduced strength. Either way , at this price it must be worth a punt for the peatsters amongst you .
