The tiny Isle of Arran was once rife with working distilleries but many of them lucked out when the market became swayed towards quantity rather than quality. Many distilleries fell into disuse until 1995 when a distillery in Lochranza reopened it’s doors to become home to the Isle of Arran Distillers. An absolutely cracking American whiskey from the Boondocks range, helmed by Dave Scheurich, former master distiller of Woodford Reserve. This expression is made with a combo heavy in corn, along with helpings of rye and malt, and matured for 11 years before bottling. It's not quite a bourbon, as it was distilled to a higher strength than allowed for bourbon (which is 160 proof, or 80% ABV), and matured in used charred white oak bourbon barrels (rather than brand new ones).
