Part of the new core range of whiskies launched by Isle of Jura in early 2018, this 10 year old expression takes the place of Jura Origin. It's initially aged in American white oak bourbon barrels before enjoying a finishing period in Oloroso sherry butts and bottled at 40% ABV. They make all their barrels fully in house to be contructed and toasted to their specifications, all their whiskey is aged in Lynchburg Tennessee, and the yeast in the fermentation process is cultivated from their first post prohibition yeast, all the way back in 1938. Great to find out that one of the most well known drinks in the world is made in a geeky way, similar to what would be considered 'craft' (scaled up quite a bit).

The second release in Jameson Caskmates range, finished this time in casks that once held zesty IPA. Jameson Caskmates is an intriguing release. Having sent some of their casks to the local craft stout brewers at Franciscan Well, the casks were returned to Midleton where they were subsequently used to give a stout finish to Jameson! We tasted it before it was available in the UK when we visited Cork just before St. Patrick's Day 2015, and we know that some of the fine folk at Irish Distillers were worried that it may be seen as a bit of a gimmick. Perhaps to an extent it is, but more importantly, it works - a worthwhile experiment that's produced a unique and interesting Irish whiskey.

Created to represent whiskey before it was mass produced, Knob Creek embodies the look, feel and taste of pre-prohibition bourbon. This is a long and patiently aged, high-rye bourbon from Jim Beam.

A single malt that many lust after, Lagavulin 16 Year Old is a southern Islay offering which combines bright rich notes with a light dryness, creating an interesting, concentrated flavour. The nose is reminiscent of Lapsang Souchong tea, exceptionally smokey with undertones of sweet sherry and vanilla. The flavour is equally intense, with a thick richness on the palate, rich in malt and sherry with bright fruited sweetness and the smoky peat always there in the background. A masterpiece of the smokey style.

Here we have an extra-special Lagavulin, released as one of Diageo’s Special Releases for 2021. It was distilled back in 1994, and has spent twenty-six years maturing in a carefully-chosen blend of Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks.

Laphroaig Quarter Cask was released in 2004 to much esteem. Youthful compared to other offerings it’s a highly commendable malt which still has a bold, enticing flavour despite its young age. Oily and butter rich on the nose, toffee, nuts and hickory smoke come through measuredly. The palate gives a bold hit of sweetness with fiery chilli heat coming through quickly in pursuit, medicinal freshness, chewy cereals and even a hint of cola also follow.
