Rum is one of the most diverse spirits on the planet. Each country that makes it has its own identity, traditions, styles, production methods, cultural influences and ways of drinking it. From spice and flavoured expressions to rums aged for long periods in oak, not to mention those that are bottle fresh straight from the still, this is a spirit worth discovering.

An African craft gin from Procera, distilled in Nairobi with 10 botanicals, all sourced from across Africa, including Madagascan pink pepper and Moroccan orris root. However, the most important botanical here is a relatively unseen species of juniper, Juniper Procera (most gins use Juniper Communis), also known as African juniper as it only grows in the highlands of Kenya and Ethiopia. This different variety gives the gin a nuttier, earthier backbone. After distillation, the gin is bottled into stunning hand-blown bottles, also produced in Nairobi. A truly unique gin.

An aged agricole rum from Damoiseau, the Millesime 2009 was produced in Guadeloupe and bottled after seven years of rest in American oak barrels. This is the 'raw' version of the 2009 vintage agricole, bottled at a warming 66.9% ABV.

Great rhum agricole from Guadeloupe's Damoiseau, the XO expression spends at least 6 years maturing in ex-bourbon casks before being bottled at 42% ABV. You'll want to try this served neat, or perhaps over ice, though we reckon some classic rhum agricole cocktails would benefit from its full bodied flavour profile.

The Salted Caramel Rum Liqueur is produced from column distilled pure sugar cane juice and reduced to 35% before being blended with natural flavours and a touch of sugar for balance. On the nose, you have a very pleasant popcorn aroma and sweetness coming through while on the palate, you can taste the creamy salted caramel. It is very smooth and leaves an after taste of fudge and hazelnut in your mouth. Don Julio Anejo 1942 spends up to two and half year ageing, nearly enough to be classed as extra anejo. It’s stilled in a single pot still and has the wonderful spiced aromas of cinnamon, sweet agave, vanilla and interesting Turkish delight. The taste is deep with cinder toffee notes, the continual flavour of the agave and bursts of sweet, zesty citrus. Dry and nutty the finish is long with notes of smoke.

A classic liqueur Kummel is a refreshing and sweet smelling drink which is packed full of flavour. An untamed young single malt from Ardbeg, Wee Beastie has spent five years in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks before being unleashed. An oaky, spicy bourbon, Horse With No Name is made with a combination of yellow dent Texas corn, soft red winter wheat and six-row distiller’s malt, and then blended with habanero chilli distillate to give it a fruity note.

Jose Cuervo 1800 Silver Tequila is a premium silver tequila that slightly plays against the rules of tradition by resting, rather than aging, in an American oak barrel for up to 15 days after distillation, just long enough to take on a dash of colour and a slightly oaky body of flavour. Sporting the freshness of a traditional silver, the flavour deepens a bit, getting a bit spicy toward the end, and definitely savoury. Madre Mezcal is brought to us by the Morales family in Oaxaca who combine both Espadin and Cuishe Agave. For this release they cook the Agaves inside Earthen Pitis and Crush it with a Stone Tahona Wheel which creates a Vegetal forward Mezcal packed full of Mint and Herb notes throughout before undertones of Pepper come through on the finish.al sip.
