Burnt fruit cake and leathery notes are the most prominent in this rum closely followed by bitter spiced oak, that classic Demerara sugar flavour and vanilla and ginger spices. The St Nicholas Abbey distillers in Barbados have rustled up a cask strength variant of their excellent 5 year old rum. Bottled at 60% ABV, expect this expression to pack a punchy flavour profile of fresh fruit and warming spices.

Dodo "Coconut" White Rum 1L Dodo "Coconut" rum is crafted from Mauritian molasses and column distiled. Following which it left to macerate with fresh coconut and a little sugar over a period of time for the flavours to aromas to blossom. Light sweet coconut aromas on the nose which give way to a full round mellow coconut taste on the palate. Perfect for a pina colada, with frsh juice and sipping over ice.

An aged agricole rum from Damoiseau, the Millesime 2009 was produced in Guadeloupe and bottled after seven years of rest in American oak barrels. This is the 'raw' version of the 2009 vintage agricole, bottled at a warming 66.9% ABV.

Golden Mauritius Rum lightly spiced. On the nose you will get a nice pleasant light spices aromas, vanilla followed by a sweet spied finish with a peppery notes on the palate.

El Dorado 21 years uses that 21 year period as a minimum benchmark and the blend is in fact made up of blends as old as 25 years and the maturity of this rum is apparent from simply opening the bottle. The aroma is filled with sweet scents reminiscent of an old fashioned sweet shop, with boiled sweets coming through strong on the palate too. The finish brings in some of the more intense notes including fresh tobacco, spiced chocolate and together they create a rum which is ideal for after dinner sips.

One of three rums released as part of El Dorado's Single Still series, this 2009 Guyanese rum has been made using the Enmore wooden column still. Matured in oak casks for 12 years, it offers notes of smoked hazelnuts, caramel apples, coconut flakes and milk chocolate throughout the palate and lingering in the finish.

Known locally as Mount Gay Black this fine Barbadian rum brings together many different blends with ages of between 8 and 12 years. In Barbados you’ll hear calls for a ‘Black and Coke’ and this can only mean a good old shot of Mount Gay XO in their drink. Spicy apricot, fiery heat and honeyed fruit work together to create the distinct flavour of Mount Gay XO. The maturation process adds a dry oaky complexity to the drink, a distinction which is widely enjoyed.

Great rhum agricole from Guadeloupe's Damoiseau, the XO expression spends at least 6 years maturing in ex-bourbon casks before being bottled at 42% ABV. You'll want to try this served neat, or perhaps over ice, though we reckon some classic rhum agricole cocktails would benefit from its full bodied flavour profile.

Havana Club Selección de Maestros is a uniquely created triple barrel aged rum which has a distinctive red glow. Toasted pecans and deep spices fill the nose and this woody character continues in the mouth feel. Interestingly, now that industry giants Diageo are distributing Zacapa, the '23 years old' age statement has suddenly been dropped and replaced with a somewhat more plausible claim – the rums used are aged between 6 and 23 years old and are blended together in a solera.

Eminente Reserva 7 Year Old is a particularly snazzy Cuban rum, made with 100% Cuban sugar cane. Bright and clean, but with plenty of complex and depth as it develops on the palate, with rich coffee and tobacco notes sitting alongside fruity cherry and floral wafts. Should do very well simply sipped neat, but we reckon it'll also make for a great Palmetto or Rum Old Fashioned...

No, there hasn’t been an accident it’s supposed to look like that! The distinctive asymmetrical bottle that R.L. Seale’s Finest rum is delivered in is just one of its many great perks. Matured in ex-madeira and ex-brandy cases this rum is awash with welcomingly sweet flavours as well as spiced notes. Spicy cooking apples are surrounded by notes of freshly baked pastry, cinnamon and nutmeg leading into a long and satisfying end of toffee apple and oak.

Twelve years work and dedication goes into the creation of El Dorado 12 year rum and three different stills’ worth of spirit is used to guarantee a perfectly smooth and enjoyable drink. The length of maturation helps develop the fruit flavours within the rum, prunes, dates and toffee apple come through strongly with sherry treacle and cinnamon spice flavours also complimenting the flavour profile. The balance of this rum is delicate, leaning slightly towards the sweet but not without a welcome hit of spice.

A very high-strength overproof pot-distilled molasses rum from Mauritius, Tilambic is aged for up to seven years. The 151 represents the strength in US proof, which means that this rum is 75.5% abv and as such should be used extremely carefully and not ingested neat.

The 54% is hidden in the chocolate notes, which brings warmth to this 12-year-old Panama rum. Nose: Heavy dark chocolate, hot cream, and touches of citrus. Gosling Black Seal 151 is a full-flavoured dark rum that has the additional benefit of oak barrels which have been used to age bourbon. It stands out against other rums of the region because of its caramelised flavour and the bourbon notes that the oak casks offer. An 80:20 blend of pot still to column still rums is used to deliver the quality taste of Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva. One of the rare 100% pot still rums out there, Smith & Cross is a Jamaican favourite which allows tropical fruity flavours to define its character. A hit of pineapple is your first hint at the flavours within and the nose develops with further spicier notes of clove, pepper and intriguing hot chilli. Pusser's 'Gunpowder Proof' Black Label (previously known as Blue Label) is a higher proof traditional British Naval rum, produced using the blending recipe from the Admiralty. Well loved, it picked up a Trophy at the International Spirits Challenge 2016.

Ron Matusalem went and sourced some wine casks for this limited edition release! The rum is charcoal filtered and matured in a solera system, before it's finished in casks which previously held Tempranillo wine. The tropical notes from the rum work wonderfully with the spicier notes from the wine cask, with just 8,000 bottles released. Rather snazzy bottle there, too.

This rum comes from the much celebrated Worthy Park Estate in Jamaica. Full bodied and rich with flavours of ginger, tropical fruit, oak and spice.

Released in the UK in 2014, the Mount Gay Black Barrel rum is made from single column and double pot distilled rum, though using a higher proportion of double pot distillates than their other expressions. It is also finished in heavily charred bourbon barrels before being bottled.

Brugal 1888 was launched in 1988 to celebrate the company’s centenary and benefits from aging in ex-whisky barrels for 14 to 16 years. A portion of the blend is also aged in sherry butts and the aroma evidences this sweet sherry scent. The flavour is full-bodied and the sherry flavour remains with vanilla, toffee and vibrant liquorice notes also come through. Dry oak tannins are underlying throughout and add depth to the character of this rum.

A 12 year old dark rum from Ron Abuelo of Panama. They age their rum in whiskey barrels, which adds a distinct vanilla sweetness. This 12 year old was launched in 2009, and is elegant, slightly smoky and rich. It was awarded a Gold at the 2009 Ministry of Rum Tasting Competition.

Trois Rivieres hides a lot of flavour in its crystal clear body. Punchy and awash with tangy notes, it is still smooth and is a great alternative choice for your classic Mojito or Daiquiri. Fresh peaches, plums and pears come through in the nose and its high ABV means once you sip you get the full depth of flavour in a single sucker punch. Despite its punchiness there is elegance to this rum and citrus and grassy notes come through to support the strength.

Bumbu Rum is based on a recipe dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries, used by pirates and merchants as a better-tasting alternative to the grog the Royal Navy served its men. This modern interpretation takes sugarcane from eight Caribbean countries before distilling at the West Indies Rum Distillery in Barbados. The rum is matured in former bourbon casks for up to fifteen years and blended with all natural native Caribbean spices and pure Bajan water filtered through the coral limestone rocks of the island. No artificial flavours or colours are added. On the nose, aromas of banana are prominent, with cinnamon and vanilla sweetness. To taste, the mature rum and natural spices bring a rich complexity. Rhum Clement was founded by Homere Clement in 1887 in Martinique, a small Caribbean island which has a unique terrior and the perfect tropical climate and humidity for producing rhum. It is the only French Caribbean island to have an AOC appellation, which they recieved in 1996.
